Deep Sea Divers
Once there were two brothers named Alex and Max. Alex and Max had always wanted to be deep sea divers from as far back as they could remember. They would practice holding their breath as long as they could, read all kinds of books about pearl divers who braved the deep waters, and took swimming lessons at a pool near their house. In the summer they dove into the deep end and stayed at the bottom as long as possible. All they wanted was to dive as deep as possible into the ocean’s most forbidding trenches.
Alex and Max knew from their reading that the deepest divers of all were scientists researching the ocean’s depths in tiny submarines. They knew that to achieve their dream they’d also have to study the ocean and work on these research teams. So all through high school they took every science class there was and read every book on oceanography in their school’s library.
Finally the day came where they were old enough to apply to take part in some of the world’s deepest dives. They knew they were ready, they’d been preparing their whole lives. They wrote to all of the top research teams offering to volunteer, if only they could have the chance to be a part of the dive team. Then they waited. And waited. Finally the responses came back: No one wanted them.
